Orange: EXTREME Green: Medium

EPCOT’s Mission Space has long been one of Walt Disney World’s most controversial attractions. It’s also one of the resort’s most nausea-inducing rides. So, how does one ride Mission Space without getting queasy? Let’s find out…

What is Mission Space?

Mission Space has been behind the eight ball as it were with hardcore Disney fans before it even opened. After all, the attraction replaced the beloved EPCOT icon Horizons. Mission Space itself is a simulator attraction that features a closed in-ride vehicle featuring screens that’s mounted on a large spinning centrifuge, all of which combines to mimic the experience of an astronaut training to launch into space and travel to Mars, complete with riders experiencing forces up to 2.5G AKA more than twice the force of gravity at the Earth’s surface.

From pretty much the day it opened in 2003, Mission Space has been dealing with motion sickness issues. Though the attraction’s designers did their best to mitigate these issues, including installing fans in the simulator vehicles to blow cool air on riders, many riders felt queasy and ill both during and after their trips. In fact, just months into the attraction’s lifespan, motion sickness bags were added to the ride vehicles within easy reach of riders.

Tips to Ride:

So, how can those prone to motion sickness attempt to enjoy Mission Space, and perhaps more importantly the rest of their day after riding Mission Space? Well, there are several things one can attempt:

-Taking Dramamine or other motion sickness medication before arriving to the park is a good place to start for Mission Space, or really for any ride that may cause queasiness. For those who suffer from mild symptoms, this may be enough.

-If you do ride and find yourself feeling ill, take a respite once you disembark. First off, head to the nearest restroom and wash your face with cool water. After that, find yourself a bench in a shaded area and just relax for several minutes to catch your bearings.

-Finally, if your body simply won’t allow you to ride the attraction, you can always go for Green. Specifically, a tamer “Green Mission” option of the ride that was added to Mission Space in 2017, which has a different storyline built around a mission in Earth’s atmosphere.
